Shoki

This piece is an excellent combination of the characters of Susano-o-no-mikoto, a Japanese god worshiped the god who eliminates diseases, Shoki, a Chinese god worshiped for the same reason, and a dream vision of Chinese Emperor Xuanzong. Emperor Xuanzong, sixth emperor of Tang Dynasty, was seriously sick in bed.

A vicious god who brings all diseases every season, which were the very cause of the Emperor’s illness, appeared in his dream.

But Shoki appeared and got rid of the god of illness with “chino-wa,” a ring of miss-canthus believed to eliminate illness when a sick person goes through the ring, and a holy sword.

Based on a Shintoistic legend, this kagura piece is performed to pray for the elimination of misfortune, evilness, and illness and for health and safety.
