Great Iwami-Kagura expedition to India in Dec. - Successfully ended

This great expedition has successfully ended and you can see the report on PDF below.

In commemoration of the 60th year of diplomatic relations between Japan and India, Iwami-Kagura, the intangible ethnic cultural asset originated in the western region of Shimane prefecture in Japan, will be performed as one of event programs at major cities in India in December 2012.

In fact, Iwami-Kagura was performed three times during the Japan-India Friendship year in 2007 at Mumbai and Chennai. They were well accepted by many enthusiastic audiences with standing ovations and calling for an anchor. It was overwhelmed and indescribable positive responses at all stages.

Based on this precious experience and acceptance by Indian people, we have planned the Iwami-kagura performance tour to New Delhi, capital city, and Chennai, major southern city.

What is Iwami-Kagura, part-1?

This is an introduction to the vivid and dynamic world of Iwami-Kagura, the dance and musical performances of ancient Japanese myths.

The following introductory video clip gives you a brief experience of Iwami-Kagura.

What is Iwami-kagura, part-2?

Kagura is the traditional sacred service dance (called Kagura-Mai) to the God/Goddess of the local Shinto shrine during annual rice-crop growth festivities.

The traditional Shinto ritual ceremony takes place at the main alter of the shrine during the day by Shinto priests and female attendants who perform a simple yet graceful sacred service dance called Mai. Then, a series of Iwami-Kagura dance episodes(or stories) follows this ceremony and runs on the Kagura-Den (sacred stage) in the precincts of the shrine from early night to dawn.

Each episode is vividly orchestrated by dynamic drum beats and beautiful nostalgic melodies of the bamboo flute accompanied by stimulating metal sounds of small brass hand-claps. A series of episodes is performed by a group of 15 to 30 members of local villagers or town people of various professions such as rice growing farmers, fishermen, salary men, store keepers and truck drivers.

What is it like?

In short, when you imagine the nature of Iwami-Kagura, it could be somewhere between Japanese traditional Kabuki (target audiences are town people) and Noh (target audiences are feudal lords and samurai.)

The target audiences of Iwami-Kagura are villagers or local community people in the region. Kabuki is a popular dramatic art form that has been a favorite among the Japanese people since the 17th century. Noh is the oldest dramatic art in Japan, having originally developed in the 14th century.

Stories or Episodes(Enmoku)

They perform more than 60 different stories, episodes or repertoire called Enmoku, each lasting 30 to 60 minutes.

Most stories come from Japanese ancient myths called the Kojiki(Record of Ancient Matters, 712AD) and the Nihonshoki(Chronicles of Japan, 720AD) written in the eighth century.

Groups(Shachu)

There are more than 100 performing groups in the areas of Iwami district and in the neighboring areas of Hiroshima prefecture which have slightly different styles and interpretations of the stories.

Costumes

The costumes are hand-made and intricately sewn Kimono dresses with glittering gold and silver threads.

The masks are exaggerated, vividly colored and deformed to emphasize the original nature of good and evil characters.

Origin

The origin of Iwami-Kagura is not very clear but believed to be in the early Edo period (17th and 19th centuries.)

Iwami-kagura became very popular after the 1970’s Osaka Exposition when a special tour performance took place at the exhibition site.

Recent trends

The recent trend of Iwami-Kagura consists of theatrical performances on the stages of cultural halls with special effects such as smoke and sparks rather than traditional local celebrations at the village shrine.

Iwami-Kagura, during the last few decades, has been the major part of local festivities in the Iwami region and is performed at occasions such as tourist events, supermarket commercial promotions, various local memorial events, and even at the Buddhist temples.

Overseas performances

In recent years, several overseas performances have been held in Korea, China, the United States and India as a part of various cultural exchange programs of Japan.

Land of Iwami

Iwami is the name of western district of Shimane-prefecture in Japan.
